Accelerated Bachelors Degree Online

An accelerated bachelors degree is still 120 credits. Nothing about the word accelerated changes that, and no accredited institution awards the degree for fewer. What accelerated programs change is how fast those credits can be earned, and they do it through four mechanisms that work for different people. The most important of the four, transfer credit, is the one the program does not control at all.

The four things that make a bachelors degree faster

1. Transfer credit. The largest lever by a wide margin. A student who arrives with 60 accepted credits has half the degree done before the first term. Most institutions cap transfer at 60 to 90 of 120 credits, and acceptance varies enormously between schools evaluating the same transcript. 3. Higher course loads. Three or four courses per eight-week term is genuine acceleration and a genuine full-time commitment. It suits students who are not working full time. It is also where most accelerated-program attrition happens.

4. Competency-based progression. Students pay for a fixed-length term, usually six months, and complete courses by passing assessments whenever they are ready. A student with substantial prior knowledge can complete far more than a normal load in a term; a student learning everything from scratch moves at roughly a normal pace. Programs that advertise very short completion times are usually combining mechanism 1 with mechanism 4: a student who arrives with 90 transfer credits and passes the remaining assessments quickly. That student exists. Whether you are that student is the question to answer honestly before enrolling.

What accelerated programs look like in practice

Accelerated online bachelors programs are not a separate category of degree. They are ordinary majors, most commonly business, information technology, healthcare administration, psychology, and criminal justice, delivered on one of the calendars above. A few things distinguish the programs that deliver on the promise:

• Transfer evaluation before enrollment, in writing, with a credits-remaining figure for the specific degree.
• All required courses offered every term or on demand. A program with six start dates for introductory courses and a once-a-year capstone is not accelerated at the end, which is where it matters.
• Enrollment in more than one course at a time permitted, or competency-based progression that allows several courses in a term.
• A degree plan, term by term, to graduation, produced by an advisor and given to you in writing.

Accelerated bachelors degrees and licensed fields

Fields that lead to a professional license, including nursing, teaching, social work, counseling, and engineering, carry programmatic accreditation and clinical or practicum requirements that do not compress. An accelerated calendar can shorten the coursework; it cannot shorten a supervised placement measured in hours. Who should not accelerate

Acceleration works for students with substantial transfer credit or prior knowledge, predictable time, and a concrete reason to finish by a date. It works against students whose schedule is unpredictable, because a missed term at an accelerated pace costs more progress than a missed term at a normal one, and because flat-rate pricing charges the full term regardless of what got done. If your worst month of the year would stop you completely, choose a per-credit program with frequent starts and accelerate only when the calendar allows it.
