Online Colleges With Open Enrollment

Open enrollment is the most misunderstood term in online college marketing. Prospective students read it as “no requirements.” Skeptics read it as “low quality.” Neither is right. Open admission is a policy about the front door: the school does not rank applicants against each other. It says nothing about what happens once you are inside, where the real filters operate, and it says nothing about accreditation, which is a separate question entirely.

This guide explains what open admission requires, where the selectivity actually sits, and how to compare open-admission schools, which vary at least as much as selective ones.

Schools to compare

The institutions below publish non-competitive undergraduate admission policies as of this writing, meaning applicants who meet stated minimum requirements are admitted without ranking against other applicants. Policies change; confirm on each school’s admissions page. They are shown as a comparison starting point, not a ranking, and each card links to the school’s federal cost data.

Editorial comparison, not a sponsored listing; sponsored listings on this site appear in labeled widgets (see our advertising disclosure). CollegeNPC.com is not affiliated with or endorsed by any institution shown. Figures are federal reporting and vary by student, program, and year; confirm current costs with each school.

One data note: the federal government exempts institutions with open admission policies from reporting acceptance rates, so the school pages for open-admission institutions on this site show no admission rate. That absence is itself the signal.

What open admission still requires

Open admission at an accredited institution means the applicant must meet stated minimums, and those minimums are real:

An institution that requires none of these, and advertises that as a feature, is not open admission. It is a warning sign covered in the are online colleges legit guide.

Where the real filters are

Selective institutions filter before admission. Open-admission institutions filter after it, and the filters are less visible.

Program admission. The institution may be open, but its nursing, education, or engineering program is not. Selective programs inside open-admission universities have GPA thresholds, prerequisite requirements, and enroll a fixed number of students each term. Confirm whether the program you want has its own admission process before assuming the institutional policy covers it.

First-term performance. Open admission moves the assessment from the application to the first term. Institutions with open admission typically show lower completion rates in federal data than selective institutions, partly because they admit students who would have been screened out elsewhere. The completion rate on each school’s page tells you how the filter operates at that specific institution.

Academic standing policies. Every institution has a minimum GPA and pace-of-completion standard that students must maintain to stay enrolled in good standing. A student admitted without academic screening who struggles in the first two terms can find those standards binding quickly. Ask what the standard is and what support exists before a student reaches it.

Placement into developmental coursework. Some institutions place students who score below thresholds on entry assessments into non-credit developmental courses. Those courses take time and do not count toward the degree. Ask whether developmental placement exists and how it is determined.

Open admission and price

Open admission institutions span the entire price range. Public community colleges, which are nearly all open admission, sit at the bottom of the published tuition distribution. The affordable online colleges list includes many of them. Large private online institutions with open admission sit in the middle. For-profit institutions with open admission span the middle and upper range.

The point is that open admission does not predict price or net price. Among primarily online four-year institutions in our dataset, the median published in-state tuition is $7,413 at public schools, $13,420 at private nonprofits, and $13,920 at private for-profits. Control status is a much stronger predictor of price than admission policy, and the nonprofit vs for-profit guide goes into it.

Easiest online colleges to get into

People search for this phrase when they have a weak high school record, a long gap, or a previous college attempt that ended badly. The honest answer has three parts.

First, admission is not the hard part. Any accredited open-admission institution will admit an applicant with a diploma or equivalent, regardless of high school GPA. If a prior college attempt ended with academic dismissal, some institutions require a waiting period or an appeal, but many do not, and a prior institution’s dismissal does not follow you to an open-admission school’s front door.

Second, prior transcripts do follow you. Every prior institution’s transcript is normally required, and the credits and grades on it are evaluated. Old failing grades rarely block admission, but they can affect how many credits transfer and where placement assessments put you. The degree completion guide covers returning after an unfinished attempt.

Third, a school being easy to enter is a reason to look harder at whether students finish. Compare completion rates across your candidates. A community college with a modest completion rate and a very low net price is a different proposition from a private institution with a similar completion rate and a net price several times higher.

Next steps

  1. Verify accreditation for every school in the DAPIP database, independent of admission policy.
  2. Confirm whether your intended program has its own selective admission process.
  3. Ask about placement assessment and developmental coursework.
  4. Compare candidates on completion rate and net price for your income bracket using their school pages here.
