What an online computer science bachelors degree usually covers

Computer science programs usually cover programming in several languages, data structures and algorithms, discrete mathematics, calculus, computer architecture, operating systems, software engineering, and theory of computation, with electives in areas such as machine learning, databases, or systems.

Curriculum varies by institution, and course titles vary more than content does. Compare the published degree plans of two or three programs side by side rather than relying on the concentration names.

Accreditation and what to verify

Institutional accreditation is required. ABET accredits computer science programs through its computing commission; it is optional, held by some online programs, and most relevant to students planning certain graduate programs or federal roles that prefer it. Verify on ABET’s own list.

Delivery format

Delivered fully online at a growing number of institutions. The mathematics sequence is the usual constraint; ask how calculus and discrete math are delivered and assessed, and whether programming assignments are auto-graded, peer-reviewed, or instructor-reviewed.

Comparing programs on the numbers

Completions tell you which institutions award the degree at scale. They do not tell you what it will cost you or whether students finish.
